Grocery Store Clerk to Successful Musician
I remember being a youth, being made fun of for playing the flute. And that’s tough to deal with, you know? And that was kinda (kind of) my whole experience, that I was at the bottom of all lists. But the flute was the one thing that I was good at. I had a full time job at a grocery store and played during my lunch break down in the subways. A little bit of beat boxing and people really tipped and hung around to listen to me.
Recuerdo ser un joven, de quien se reían por tocar la flauta. Y eso es duro de lidiar, ¿sabes? Y esa fue prácticamente toda mi experiencia, que yo era el último de todas las listas. Pero la flauta era esa única cosa en lo que era bueno. Tenía un trabajo de tiempo completo en una tienda de comestibles y tocaba durante mi tiempo de almuerzo en el subterráneo. Un poco de beat boxing y la gente realmente me daba propina y se quedaba ahí para escucharme.
When you’re down in the subway, you can really experiment. You can tell
how well it’s working by the people that stop or the people that tipped you. The first
videos actually that I put up on YouTube was (correct: were) just my best subway tunes when people tipped the most. And I remember working in the grocery store one day and someone said, “Hey, I saw your video.” And funny enough, over night I got a million views on one of these videos. People saw it, passed it around, and it ended up on the front page of YouTube, which now has 20,000,000 views. I finally took the plunge and quit the day job and you never really know where that next check is gonna (going to) come from. But that happened over 3 years ago now. I have never looked back.
Cuando estas abajo en el subterráneo, puedes realmente experimentar. Puedes saber qué tan bien está por la cantidad de gente que se detiene y te da propina. Los primeros videos que puse en YouTube fueron mis mejores melodías del subterráneo, en las que la gente más propina daba. Y recuerdo estar trabajando en la tienda un día y alguien me dijo, “Ey, vi tu video.” Y curiosamente, de la noche a la mañana obtuve un millón de visitas en uno de estos videos, que ahora tiene 20,000,000 de visitas. Finalmente decidí arriesgarme y renuncié al trabajo de día y en realidad no sabes de dónde va a venir el próximo cheque. Pero eso pasó hace ya 3 años. Y nunca he mirado atrás.
